LIS-Water, a new international centre for water formally created in Portugal

The Lisbon International Centre for Water, LIS-Water (, a non-profit association dedicated to public policies, regulation and management of water services, was formally established this year in March.

Based on the successful experience of Portugal on shifting the water sector, LIS-Water envisions to drive change in the world through better water governance, within the framework of sustainable development. LIS-Water’s approach relies on three pillars, public policy, regulation and management of water and sanitation services. It is currently supported by more than 130 organizations, from all types of water stakeholders and from around the world.

LIS-Water has already started its activity and is located on the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering campus, in Lisbon, Portugal. One of its ongoing activities is ProAguas – Advanced program on management of water services, targeted at managers and policy makers of water utilities. Strategic asset management is one of the modules of the program, which addresses topics of public policy, regulation, management, technical, economic and financial, legal, social and environmental aspects.
